Itwasveryevidentthatwewerebeinghurriedupwarduponthecrestofawaveoferuption;beneathourraftwereboilingwaters,andunderthesethemoresluggishlavawasworkingitswayupinaheatedmass,togetherwithshoalsoffragmentsofrockwhich,whentheyarrivedatthecrater,wouldbedispersedinalldirectionshighandlow.Wewereimprisonedintheshaftorchimneyofsomevolcano.Therewasnoroomtodoubtofthat.
Butthistime,insteadofSnæfell,anextinctvolcano,wewereinsideoneinfullactivity.Iwondered,therefore,wherecouldthismountainbe,andinwhatpartoftheworldweweretobeshotout.
