Anhourpassedaway—twohours,perhaps—Icannottell.Weclutchedeachotherfast,tosaveourselvesfrombeingthrownofftheraft.Wefeltviolentshockswheneverwewereborneheavilyagainstthecraggyprojections.Yettheseshockswerenotveryfrequent,fromwhichIconcludedthatthegullywaswidening.ItwasnodoubtthesameroadthatSaknussemmhadtaken;butinsteadofwalkingpeaceablydownit,ashehaddone,wewerecarryingawholeseaalongwithus.
Theseideas,itwillbeunderstood,presentedthemselvestomymindinavagueandundeterminedform.Ihaddifficultyinassociatinganyideastogetherduringthisheadlongrace,whichseemedlikeaverticaldescent.Tojudgebytheairwhichwaswhistlingpastmeandmadeawhizzinginmyears,weweremovingfasterthanthefastestexpresstrains.Tolightatorchunderthese’conditionswouldhavebeenimpossible;andourlastelectricapparatushadbeenshatteredbytheforceoftheexplosion.
Iwasthereforemuchsurprisedtoseeaclearlightshiningnearme.ItlightedupthecalmandunmovedcountenanceofHans.Theskilfulhuntsmanhadsucceededinlightingthelantern;andalthoughitflickeredsomuchastothreatentogoout,itthrewafitfullightacrosstheawfuldarkness.
Iwasrightinmysupposition.Itwasawidegallery.Thedimlightcouldnotshowusbothitswallsatonce.ThefallofthewaterswhichwerecarryingusawayexceededthatoftheswiftestrapidsinAmericanrivers.
