Hanshadspokentruly.Twomonstersonlywerecreatingallthiscommotion;andbeforemyeyesaretworeptilesoftheprimitiveworld.Icandistinguishtheeyeoftheichthyosaurusglowinglikeared-hotcoal,andaslargeasaman’shead.Naturehasendoweditwithanopticalapparatusofextremepower,andcapableofresistingthepressureofthegreatvolumeofwaterinthedepthsitinhabits.Ithasbeenappropriatelycalledthesaurianwhale,forithasboththeswiftnessandtherapidmovementsofthismonsterofourownday.Thisoneisnotlessthanahundredfeetlong,andIcanjudgeofitssizewhenitsweepsoverthewaterstheverticalcoilsofitstail.Itsjawisenormous,andaccordingtonaturalistsitisarmedwithnolessthanonehundredandeighty-twoteeth.
Theplesiosaurus,aserpentwithacylindricalbodyandashorttail,hasfourflappersorpaddlestoactlikeoars.Itsbodyisentirelycoveredwithathickarmourofscales,anditsneck,asflexibleasaswan’s,risesthirtyfeetabovethewaves.
Thosehugecreaturesattackedeachotherwiththegreatestanimosity.Theyheavedaroundthemliquidmountains,whichrolledeventoourraftandrockeditperilously.Twentytimeswewerenearcapsizing.Hissingsofprodigiousforceareheard.Thetwobeastsarefastlockedtogether;Icannotdistinguishtheonefromtheother.Theprobablerageoftheconquerorinspiresuswithintensefear.
Onehour,twohours,passaway.Thestrugglecontinueswithunabatedferocity.Thecombatantsalternatelyapproachandrecedefromourraft.Weremainmotionless,readytofire.Suddenlytheichthyosaurusandtheplesiosaurusdisappearbelow,leavingawhirlpooleddyinginthewater.Severalminutespassbywhilethefightgoesonunderwater.
