WewerenowbeginningtoscalethesteepsidesofSnæfell.Itssnowysummit,byanopticalillusionnotunfrequentinmountains,seemedclosetous,andyethowmanywearyhoursittooktoreachit!Thestones,adheringbynosoilorfibrousrootsofvegetation,rolledawayfromunderourfeet,andrusheddowntheprecipicebelowwiththeswiftnessofanavalanche.
Atsomeplacestheflanksofthemountainformedananglewiththehorizonofatleast36degrees;itwasimpossibletoclimbthem,andthesestonycliffshadtobetackedround,notwithoutgreatdifficulty.Thenwehelpedeachotherwithoursticks.
Imustadmitthatmyunclekeptasclosetomeashecould;heneverlostsightofme,andinmanystraitshisarmfurnishedmewithapowerfulsupport.Hehimselfseemedtopossessaninstinctforequilibrium,forheneverstumbled.TheIcelanders,thoughburdenedwithourloads,climbedwiththeagilityofmountaineers.
TojudgebythedistantappearanceofthesummitofSnæfell,itwouldhaveseemedtoosteeptoascendonourside.Fortunately,afteranhouroffatigueandathleticexercises,inthemidstofthevastsurfaceofsnowpresentedbythehollowbetweenthetwopeaks,akindofstaircaseappearedunexpectedlywhichgreatlyfacilitatedourascent.Itwasformedbyoneofthosetorrentsofstonesflungupbytheeruptions,called‘sting’bytheIcelanders.Ifthistorrenthadnotbeenarrestedinitsfallbytheformationofthesidesofthemountain,itwouldhavegoneontotheseaandformedmoreislands.
Suchasitwas,itdidusgoodservice.Thesteepnessincreased,butthesestonestepsallowedustorisewithfacility,andevenwithsuchrapiditythat,havingrestedforamomentwhilemycompanionscontinuedtheirascent,Iperceivedthemalreadyreducedbydistancetomicroscopicdimensions.
