Butwiththehelpofthisoutflowthethicknessofthecrustoftheislandincreasedmaterially,andthereforealsoitspowersofresistance.Itmayeasilybeconceivedwhatvastquantitiesofelasticgases,whatmassesofmoltenmatteraccumulatedbeneathitssolidsurfacewhilstnoexitwaspracticableafterthecoolingofthetrachyticcrust.Thereforeatimewouldcomewhentheelasticandexplosiveforcesoftheimprisonedgaseswouldupheavethisponderouscoveranddriveoutforthemselvesopeningsthroughtallchimneys.Hencethenthevolcanowoulddistendandliftupthecrust,andthenburstthroughacratersuddenlyformedatthesummitorthinnestpartofthevolcano.
Totheeruptionsucceededothervolcanicphenomena.Throughtheoutletsnowmadefirstescapedtheejectedbasaltofwhichtheplainwehadjustleftpresentedsuchmarvellousspecimens.Weweremovingovergreyrocksofdenseandmassiveformation,whichincoolinghadformedintohexagonalprisms.Everywherearounduswesawtruncatedcones,formerlysomanyfierymouths.
