Maloneatadrinking-placebythelake,anddrawninthesketch-bookofthatadventurousAmericanwhohadfirstpenetratedthisunknownworld.Hedescribedalsotheiguanodonandthepterodactyl—twoofthefirstofthewonderswhichtheyhadencountered.Hethenthrilledtheassemblybysomeaccountoftheterriblecarnivorousdinosaurs,whichhadonmorethanoneoccasionpursuedmembersoftheparty,andwhichwerethemostformidableofallthecreatureswhichtheyhadencountered.Thencehepassedtothehugeandferociousbird,thephororachus,andtothegreatelkwhichstillroamsuponthisupland.Itwasnot,however,untilhesketchedthemysteriesofthecentrallakethatthefullinterestandenthusiasmoftheaudiencewerearoused.OnehadtopinchoneselftobesurethatonewasawakeasoneheardthissaneandpracticalProfessorincoldmeasuredtonesdescribingthemonstrousthree-eyedfish-lizardsandthehugewater-snakeswhichinhabitthisenchantedsheetofwater.NexthetouchedupontheIndians,andupontheextraordinarycolonyofanthropoidapes,whichmightbelookeduponasanadvanceuponthepithecanthropusofJava,andascomingthereforenearerthananyknownformtothathypotheticalcreation,themissinglink.Finallyhedescribed,amongstsomemerriment,theingeniousbuthighlydangerousaeronauticinventionofProfessorChallenger,andwoundupamostmemorableaddressbyanaccountofthemethodsbywhichthecommitteedidatlastfindtheirwaybacktocivilization.
