AllthisIshallsomedaywriteatfullerlength,andamidstthesemorestirringdaysIwouldtenderlysketchintheselovelysummerevenings,whenwiththedeepblueskyaboveuswelayingoodcomradeshipamongthelonggrassesbythewoodandmarveledatthestrangefowlthatsweptoverusandthequaintnewcreatureswhichcreptfromtheirburrowstowatchus,whileaboveustheboughsofthebusheswereheavywithlusciousfruit,andbelowusstrangeandlovelyflowerspeepedatusfromamongtheherbage;orthoselongmoonlitnightswhenwelayoutupontheshimmeringsurfaceofthegreatlakeandwatchedwithwonderandawethehugecirclesripplingoutfromthesuddensplashofsomefantasticmonster;orthegreenishgleam,fardowninthedeepwater,ofsomestrangecreatureupontheconfinesofdarkness.Thesearethesceneswhichmymindandmypenwilldwelluponineverydetailatsomefutureday.
But,youwillask,whytheseexperiencesandwhythisdelay,whenyouandyourcomradesshouldhavebeenoccupieddayandnightinthedevisingofsomemeansbywhichyoucouldreturntotheouterworld?Myansweris,thattherewasnotoneofuswhowasnotworkingforthisend,butthatourworkhadbeeninvain.Onefactwehadveryspeedilydiscovered:TheIndianswoulddonothingtohelpus.
