Screamingandhowling,thegreatcreaturesrushedawayinalldirectionsthroughthebrushwood,whileouralliesyelledintheirsavagedelight,followingswiftlyaftertheirflyingenemies.Allthefeudsofcountlessgenerations,allthehatredsandcrueltiesoftheirnarrowhistory,allthememoriesofill-usageandpersecutionweretobepurgedthatday.Atlastmanwastobesupremeandtheman-beasttofindforeverhisallottedplace.Flyastheywouldthefugitivesweretooslowtoescapefromtheactivesavages,andfromeverysideinthetangledwoodsweheardtheexultantyells,thetwangingofbows,andthecrashandthudasape-menwerebroughtdownfromtheirhiding-placesinthetrees.
Iwasfollowingtheothers,whenIfoundthatLordJohnandChallengerhadcomeacrosstojoinus.
