Soitseemedtous;andyetweweremistaken.Wehadhardlyclosedthethornbushdoorofourzareba,claspedeachother’shands,andthrownourselvespantinguponthegroundbesideourspring,whenweheardapatteroffeetandthenagentle,plaintivecryingfromoutsideourentrance.LordRoxtonrushedforward,rifleinhand,andthrewitopen.There,prostrateupontheirfaces,laythelittleredfiguresofthefoursurvivingIndians,tremblingwithfearofusandyetimploringourprotection.
