Atlast—andMotherWolf’sneckbristlesliftedasthetimecame—FatherWolfpushed"MowglitheFrog,"astheycalledhim,intothecenter,wherehesatlaughingandplayingwithsomepebblesthatglistenedinthemoonlight.
Akelaneverraisedhisheadfromhispaws,butwentonwiththemonotonouscry: "Lookwell!" Amuffledroarcameupfrombehindtherocks—thevoiceofShereKhancrying: "Thecubismine. Givehimtome. WhathavetheFreePeopletodowithaman’scub?" Akelanevereventwitchedhisears. Allhesaidwas: "Lookwell,OWolves! WhathavetheFreePeopletodowiththeordersofanysavetheFreePeople? Lookwell!"
Therewasachorusofdeepgrowls,andayoungwolfinhisfourthyearflungbackShereKhan’squestiontoAkela: "WhathavetheFreePeopletodowithaman’scub?" Now,theLawoftheJunglelaysdownthatifthereisanydisputeastotherightofacubtobeacceptedbythePack,hemustbespokenforbyatleasttwomembersofthePackwhoarenothisfatherandmother.
