           TheLoneWolfmusthavesprungandmissedhishold,forMowgliheardthesnapofhisteethandthenayelpastheSambhurknockedhimoverwithhisforefoot. 

           Hedidnotwaitforanythingmore,butdashedon; andtheyellsgrewfainterbehindhimasheranintothecroplandswherethevillagerslived. 

           "Bagheeraspoketruth,"hepanted,ashenestleddowninsomecattlefodderbythewindowofahut. "To-morrowisonedaybothforAkelaandforme." 

           Thenhepressedhisfaceclosetothewindowandwatchedthefireonthehearth. Hesawthehusbandman’swifegetupandfeeditinthenightwithblacklumps. Andwhenthemorningcameandthemistswereallwhiteandcold,hesawtheman’schildpickupawickerpotplasteredinsidewithearth,fillitwithlumpsofred-hotcharcoal,putitunderhisblanket,andgoouttotendthecowsinthebyre. 

           "Isthatall?"saidMowgli. "Ifacubcandoit,thereisnothingtofear." Sohestroderoundthecornerandmettheboy,tookthepotfromhishand,anddisappearedintothemistwhiletheboyhowledwithfear. 

           "Theyareverylikeme,"saidMowgli,blowingintothepotashehadseenthewomando. "ThisthingwilldieifIdonotgiveitthingstoeat"; andhedroppedtwigsanddriedbarkontheredstuff. HalfwayupthehillhemetBagheerawiththemorningdewshininglikemoonstonesonhiscoat.
