Bagheerawouldlieoutonabranchandcall, "Comealong,LittleBrother," andatfirstMowgliwouldclinglikethesloth,butafterwardhewouldflinghimselfthroughthebranchesalmostasboldlyasthegrayape. HetookhisplaceattheCouncilRock,too,whenthePackmet,andtherehediscoveredthatifhestaredhardatanywolf,thewolfwouldbeforcedtodrophiseyes,andsoheusedtostareforfun. Atothertimeshewouldpickthelongthornsoutofthepadsofhisfriends,forwolvessufferterriblyfromthornsandbursintheircoats. Hewouldgodownthehillsideintothecultivatedlandsbynight,andlookverycuriouslyatthevillagersintheirhuts,buthehadamistrustofmenbecauseBagheerashowedhimasquareboxwithadropgatesocunninglyhiddeninthejunglethathenearlywalkedintoit,andtoldhimthatitwasatrap. HelovedbetterthananythingelsetogowithBagheeraintothedarkwarmheartoftheforest,tosleepallthroughthedrowsyday,andatnightseehowBagheeradidhiskilling. Bagheerakilledrightandleftashefelthungry,andsodidMowgli—withoneexception. Assoonashewasoldenoughtounderstandthings,BagheeratoldhimthathemustnevertouchcattlebecausehehadbeenboughtintothePackatthepriceofabull’slife.
