Hewouldhaveretreated;but,foratime,hefeltabsolutelyunabletorisetohisfeet;andheremainedkneeling,inasortofstupefiedterror—watchingtheweirdformtillitrecededoutofsightfaroffoverthemoonlitplain.Nottillthendidherecoversufficientcourage,toenablehimtoglidebackdownthegorge,andontowardsthejacalé.
