Onthebluffs,thatonbothsidesoverlookedtherivulet—andwhichwerebuttheterminationoftheescarpmentofthehigherplain—grewinabundancethematerialoutofwhichthehuthadbeenconstructed:treeyuccasandmagueys,amidstotherruggedtypesofsterilevegetation;whereasthefertilevalleybelowwascoveredwithagrowthofheavytimber—consistingchieflyofred-mulberry,post-oak,andpecân,thatformedaforestofseveralleaguesinlength.Thetimberedtractwas,infact,conterminouswiththebottomlands;thetopsofthetreesscarcerisingtoalevelwiththeescarpmentofthecliff.
Itwasnotcontinuous.Alongtheedgeofthestreamletwerebreaks—forminglittlemeads,orsavannahs,coveredwiththatmostnutritiousofgrasses,knownamongMexicansasgrama.
Intheconcavityofoneofthese,ofsemicircularshape—whichservedasanaturallawn—stoodtheprimitivedwellingabovedescribed;thestreamletrepresentingthechord;whilethecurvewastracedbythetrunksofthetrees,thatresembledaseriesofcolumnssupportingtheroofofsomesylvancoliseum.
Thestructurewasinshadow,alittleretiredamongthetrees;asifthesitehadbeenchosenwithaviewtoconcealment.Itcouldhavebeenseenbutbyonepassingalongthebankofthestream;andthenonlywiththeobserverdirectlyinfrontofit.Itsrudestyleofarchitecture,andrussethue,contributedstillfurthertoitsinconspicuousness.
