           "Nothere.Yonderitisblowingahurricane,andthiswaytoodirect.Byheavens!itisnearingusrapidly!Idoubtifweshallbeabletocleartheburnttrack."

           "Whatistobedone?"exclaimedtheplanter,terrifiedbytheannouncement.

           "Areyourmulesdoingtheirbest?"

           "Theyare:theycouldnotbedrivenfaster."

           "Ifearweshallbetoolate,then!"

           Asthespeakergaveutterancetothisgloomyconjecture,hereinedroundoncemore;andsateregardingthecloudcolumnsasifcalculatingtherateatwhichtheywereadvancing.

           Thelines,contractingaroundhislips,toldofsomethingmorethandissatisfaction.

           "Yes:toolate!"heexclaimed,suddenlyterminatinghisscrutiny."Theyaremovingfasterthanwefarfaster.Thereisnohopeofourescapingthem!"

           "GoodGod,sir!isthedangersogreat?Canwedonothingtoavoidit?"
