           ThenSirGawain,stillfollowinghisquestbythedistantbayingofthehounds,cametoagreatriver,andsawthehartswimmingoverandneartothefurtherbank.Andashewasabouttoplungeinandswimafter,hesawaknightupontheotherside,whocried,“Comenotoverhere,Sirknight,afterthathart,savethouwiltjoustwithme.”

           “Iwillnotfailforthat,”saidSirGawain;andswamhishorseacrossthestream.

           Anontheygottheirspears,andranagainsteachotherfiercely;andSirGawainsmotethestrangeroffhishorse,andturning,badehimyield.

           “Nay,”repliedhe,“notso;forthoughyehavethebetterofmeonhorseback,Ipraythee,valiantknight,alight,andletusmatchtogetherwithourswordsonfoot.”

           “Whatisthyname?”quothGawain.

           “AllardinoftheIsles,”repliedthestranger.

           Thentheyfelloneachother;butsoonSirGawainstruckhimthroughthehelm,sodeeplyandsohard,thatallhisbrainswerescattered,andSirAllardinfelldead.
