SoonthereafteritbefellthatAureliuswasslainbypoisonatWinchester,andwashimselfburiedwithintheGiants’Dance.
Atthesametimecameforthacometofamazingsizeandbrightness,dartingoutabeam,attheendwhereofwasacloudoffireshapedlikeadragon,fromwhosemouthwentouttworays,onestretchingoverGaul,theotherendinginsevenlesserraysovertheIrishsea.
Attheappearanceofthisstaragreatdreadfelluponthepeople,andUther,marchingintoCambriaagainstthesonofVortigern,himselfwasverytroubledtolearnwhatitmightmean.ThenMerlin,beingcalledbeforehim,criedwithaloudvoice:“Omightyloss!OstrickenBritain!Alas!thegreatprinceisgonefromus.AureliusAmbrosiusisdead,whosedeathwillbeoursalso,unlessGodhelpus.Haste,therefore,nobleUther,todestroytheenemy;thevictoryshallbethine,andthoushaltbekingofallBritain.Forthestarwiththefierydragonsignifiesthyself;andtherayoverGaulportendsthatthoushalthaveason,mostmighty,whomallthosekingdomsshallobeywhichtheraycovers.”
Thus,forthesecondtime,didMerlinforetellthecomingofKingArthur.
