           “Givemethetruncheon,”criedoutSirBalintohislady,“wherewithheslewthyknight.”Andwhenshegaveithim—forshehadalwayscarrieditaboutwithher,wherevershehadgone—hesmotehimthroughthebodywithit,andsaid,“Withthattruncheondidstthoutreacherouslymurderagoodknight,andnowitstickethinthyfelonbody.”

           Thenhecalledtothefatherofthewoundedson,whohadcomewithhimtoListeniss,andsaid,“Nowtakeasmuchbloodasthouwilt,tohealthysonwithal.”

           Butnowaroseaterribleconfusion,andalltheknightsleapedfromthetabletoslayBalin,KingPelleshimselftheforemost,whocriedout,“Knight,thouhastslainmybrotheratmyboard;die,therefore,die,forthoushaltneverleavethiscastle.”

           “Slayme,thyself,then,”shoutedBalin.

           “Yea,”saidtheking,“thatwillI!fornoothermanshalltouchthee,fortheloveIbearmybrother.”

           ThenKingPellescaughtinhishandagrimweaponandsmoteeagerlyatBalin,butBalinputhisswordbetweenhisheadandtheking’sstroke,andsavedhimselfbutlosthissword,whichfelldownsmashedandshiveredintopiecesbytheblow.Sobeingweaponlessherantothenextroomtofindasword,andsofromroomtoroom,withKingPellesafterhim,heinvainevereagerlycastinghiseyesroundeveryplacetofindsomeweapon.
