           WhereatSirLancelotsorrowfullycalledhisknightstogetherandfortifiedtheCastleofBenwicke,andtherewasshortlybesiegedbythearmyofKingArthur.

           NowSirGawainhadthroughmagicamarvellousgreatgift.Foreveryday,frommorningtillnoon,hisstrengthwaxedtothemightofsevenmen,butafterthatwanedtohisnaturalforce.ThereforetillnoonhegaveSirLancelotmanymightybuffets,whichscarcelyheendured.YetgreatlyheforboreSirGawain,forhewasawareofhisenchantment,andsmotehimslightlytillhisownknightsmarvelled.ButafternoonSirGawain’sstrengthsankfast,andthen,withonefullblow,SirLancelotlaidhimontheearth.ThenSirGawaincriedout,“Turnnotaway,thoutraitorknight,butslaymeifthouwilt,orelseIwillariseandfightwiththeeagainsomeothertime.”
