           Andmanyoftheladieswholovedknightswouldhavegonewiththem,butwereforbiddenbythehermitNacien,whosentthismessagetoallwhohadswornthemselvestothequest:“Takewithyenoladynorgentlewoman,forintosohighaserviceasyegoin,nothoughtbutofourLordandheavenmayenter.”

           Onthemorrowmorningalltheknightsroseearly,andwhentheywerefullyarmed,saveshieldsandhelms,theywentinwiththekingandqueentoserviceintheminster.Thenthekingcountedallwhohadtakentheadventureonthemselves,andfoundthemahundredandfiftyknightsoftheRoundTable;andsotheyallputontheirhelms,androdeawaytogetherinthemidstofcriesandlamentationsfromthecourt,andfromtheladies,andfromallthetown.

           Butthequeenwentalonetoherchamber,thatnomanmightseehersorrow;andSirLancelotfollowedhertosayfarewell.

           Whenshesawhimshecriedout,“Oh,SirLancelot,thouhastbetrayedme;thouhastputmetodeaththustodepartandleavemylordtheking.”

           “Ah,madam,”saidhe,“benotdispleasedorangry,forIshallcomeagainassoonasIcanwithhonour.”

           “Alas!”saidshe,“thateverIsawthee;butHethatsuffereddeathuponthecrossforallmankindbetotheesafetyandgoodconduct,andtoallthycompany.”

           ThenSirLancelotsalutedherandtheking,andwentforthwiththerest,andcamewiththemthatnighttoCastleVagon,wheretheyabode,andonthemorrowtheydepartedfromeachotherontheirseparateways,everyknighttakingthewaythatpleasedhimbest.
