           “Alas!”saidKingArthur,“whereisthatknight?itisshametolethimthusescapeus.”Thenhecomfortedhisknights,andsaid,“Benotdismayed,myfriends,howbeityehavelosttheday;beofgoodcheer;to-morrowImyselfwillbeinthefield,andfarewithyou.”Sotheyallrestedthatnight.

           Andonthemorrowtheheraldsblewuntothefield.SotheKingofNorthWalesandtheKingofaHundredKnightsencounteredwithKingCaradosandtheKingofIreland,andoverthrewthem.WiththatcameKingArthur,anddidmightydeedsofarms,andoverthrewtheKingofNorthWalesandhisfellows,andputtwentyvaliantknightstotheworse.AnoncameinSirPalomedes,andmadegreatfightuponKingArthur’sside.ButSirTristramrodefuriouslyagainsthim,andSirPalomedeswasthrownfromhishorse.ThencriedKingArthur,“KnightoftheBlackShield,keepthyself.”Andashespakehecameuponhim,andsmotehimfromhissaddletotheground,andsopassedontootherknights.ThenSirPalomedeshavingnowanotherhorserushedatSirTristram,ashewasonfoot,thinkingtorunoverhim.Buthewasawareofhim,andsteppedaside,andgraspedSirPalomedesbythearms,andpulledhimoffhishorse.Thentheyrushedtogetherwiththeirswords,andmanystoodstilltogazeonthem.AndSirTristramsmoteSirPalomedeswiththreemightystrokesuponthehelm,cryingateachstroke,“TakethisforSirTristram’ssake,”andwiththatSirPalomedesfelltotheearth.

           AnontheKingofNorthWalesbroughtSirTristramanotherhorse,andSirPalomedesfoundonealso.
