           Now,whentheywereunarmedandreadytotakerest,therecametothecastle-gatetwoknights,SirPalomedesandSirGaheris,anddesiredthecustomofthecastle.

           “Iwouldfarratherrestthanfight,”saidSirDinadan.

           “Thatmaynotbe,”repliedSirTristram,“forwemustneedsdefendthecustomofthecastle,seeingwehaveovercomeitslords;therefore,makeready.”

           “AlasthatIevercameintoyourcompany,”saidSirDinadan.

           Sotheymadeready,andSirGaherisencounteredSirTristramandfellbeforehim;butSirPalomedesoverthrewSirDinadan.ThenwouldallfightonfootsaveSirDinadan,forhewassorelybruisedandfrightedbyhisfall.AndwhenSirTristramprayedhimtofight,“Iwillnot,”answeredhe,“forIwaswoundedbythosethirtyknightswithwhomwefoughtthismorning;andastoyou,yeareintruthlikeonegonemad,andwhowouldcasthimselfaway!Therebebuttwoknightsintheworldsomad,andtheotherisSirLancelot,withwhomIoncerodeforth,whokeptmeevermoreatbattlingsothatforaquarterofayearthereafterIlayinmybed.Heavendefendmeagainfromeitherofyourfellowships!”

           “Well,”saidSirTristram,“ifitmustbe,Iwillfightthemboth.”

           TherewithhedrewhisswordandassailedSirPalomedesandSirGaheristogether;butSirPalomedessaid,“Nay,butitisashamefortwotofightwithone.”SohebadeSirGaherisstandby,andheandSirTristramfoughtlongtogether;butintheendSirTristramdravehimbackward,whereatSirGaherisandSirDinadanwithoneaccordsunderedthem.
