           Butonacertainday,whilehewasbathing,camethequeenwithLaBelleIsaultbychanceintohischamber,andsawhisswordlienakedonthebed:anonshedrewitfromthescabbardandlookedatitalongwhile,andboththoughtitapassingfairsword;butwithinafootandahalfoftheendtherewasagreatpiecebrokenout,andwhilethequeenwaslookingatthegap,shesuddenlyrememberedthepieceofsword-bladethatwasfoundinthebrain-panofherbrotherSirMarhaus.

           Therewithsheturnedandcried,“Bymyfaith,thisisthefelonknightwhoslewthyuncle!”AndrunningtoherchambershesoughtinhercasketforthepieceofironfromSirMarhaus’headandbroughtitback,andfitteditinTristram’ssword;andsurelydiditfitthereinascloselyasithadbeenbutyesterdaybrokeout.

           Thenthequeencaughttheswordupfiercelyinherhand,andranintotheroomwhereSirTristramwasyetinhisbath,andmakingstraightforhim,hadrunhimthroughthebody,hadnothissquire,SirHebes,gotherinhisarms,andpulledtheswordawayfromher.

           Thenranshetotheking,andfelluponherkneesbeforehim,saying,“Lordandhusband,thouhasthereinthyhousethatfelonknightwhoslewmybrotherMarhaus!”

           “Whoisit?”saidtheking.

           “ItisSirTristram!”saidshe,“whomIsaulthathhealed.”

           “Alas!”repliedtheking,“Iamfullgrievedthereat,forheisagoodknightaseverIhaveseeninanyfield;butIchargetheeleavethouhim,andletmedealwithhim.
