           Thentheknightbeggedthedamseltorestthatnightathiscastle.Sotheyallrodethither,andeverthedamselscoffedatSirBeaumainsasakitchenboy,andlaughedathimbeforetheknighttheirhost,sothathesethismeatbeforehimatalowertable,asthoughhewerenotoftheircompany.

           Andonthemorrow,thedamselandSirBeaumainstooktheirleaveoftheknight,andthankinghimdeparted.Thentheyrodeontheirwaytilltheycametoagreatforest,throughwhichflowedariver,andtherewasbutonepassageoverit,whereatstoodtwoknightsarmedtohindertheway.“Wiltthoumatchthosetwoknights,”saidthedamseltoSirBeaumains,“orreturnagain?”“Iwouldnotreturn,”saidhe,“thoughtheyweresix.”Therewithhegallopedintothewater,andswamhishorseintothemiddleofthestream.Andthere,intheriver,oneoftheknightsmethim,andtheybraketheirspearstogether,andthendrewtheirswords,andsmotefiercelyateachother.Andatthelast,SirBeaumainsstrucktheothermightilyuponthehelm,sothathefelldownstunnedintothewater,andwasdrowned.ThenSirBeaumainsspurredhishorseontotheland,whereinstantlytheotherknightfellonhim.Andtheyalsobraketheirspearsuponeachother,andthendrewtheirswords,andfoughtsavagelyandlongtogether.Andaftermanyblows,SirBeaumainsclovethroughtheknight’sskulldowntotheshoulders.
