           ThenPrianiusandSirGawainalightedandlettheirhorsesgrazewhiletheyunarmed,andwhentheytooktheirarmourandtheirclothingoff,thehotbloodrandownfreshlyfromtheirwoundstillitwaspiteoustosee.ButPrianiustookfromhispageavialfilledfromthefourriversthatflowoutofParadise,andanointedboththeirwoundswithacertainbalm,andwashedthemwiththatwater,andwithinanhourafterwardstheywerebothassoundandwholeasevertheyhadbeen.Then,atthesoundofatrumpet,alltheknightswereassembledtocouncil;andaftermuchtalking,Prianiussaid,“Ceaseyourwords,forIwarnyouinyonderwoodyeshallfindknightsoutofnumber,whowillputoutcattleforadecoytoleadyouon;andyearenotsevenhundred!”

           “Nevertheless,”saidSirGawain,“letusatonceencounterthem,andseewhattheycando;andmaythebesthavethevictory.”

           ThentheysawsuddenlyanearlnamedSirEthelwold,andtheDukeofDuchmencomeleapingoutofambushofthewoodsinfront,withmanyathousandafterthem,andallrodestraightdowntothebattle.AndSirGawain,fullofardourandcourage,comfortedhisknights,saying,“Theyallareours.”Thenthesevenhundredknights,inoneclosecompany,setspurstotheirhorsesandbegantogallop,andfiercelymettheirenemies.Andthenweremenandhorsesslainandoverthrownoneveryside,andinandoutamidstthemall,theknightsoftheRoundTablepressedandthrust,andsmotedowntotheearthallwhowithstoodthem,tillatlengththewholeofthemturnedbackandfled.
