           Napoleonapprovedofthispoemandcausedittobeinscribedonthewallofthebigbarn,attheoppositeendfromtheSevenCommandments. ItwassurmountedbyaportraitofNapoleon,inprofile,executedbySquealerinwhitepaint.

           AtaboutthesametimeitwasgivenoutthatNapoleonhadarrangedtosellthepileoftimbertoMr.Pilkington;hewasalsogoingtoenterintoaregularagreementfortheexchangeofcertainproductsbetweenAnimalFarmandFoxwood. TherelationsbetweenNapoleonandPilkington,thoughtheywereonlyconductedthroughWhymper,werenowalmostfriendly. TheanimalsdistrustedPilkington,asahumanbeing,butgreatlypreferredhimtoFrederick,whomtheybothfearedandhated. Asthesummerworeon,andthewindmillnearedcompletion,therumoursofanimpendingtreacherousattackgrewstrongerandstronger.
