           Hestoodandgazed,stucksilentbyitsbeauty.Hereintruthwasadancing-floorforwoodnymphs,aplaygroundfortheGoodFolk.Itseemedstrangethattheplaceshouldbeuntenanted....Therewasarustlinginthecovert,andhisheartbeat.Hewasnolongertheadventurousboy,butayoungmanwithafancyfedbyknowledge.Hefeltthatthegladewasawareandnotempty.Lightfeethadlatelybrusheditssward....Therewasarustlingagain,andagleamofcolour.Hestoodpoisedlikearunner,hisbloodthrobbinginasuddenrapture.

           Therewasthegleamagainandtherustle.Hethoughtthatatthefarendofthegladebehindtheredbrackenhesawafigure.Intwostepshewascertain.Agreengownfluttered,andathisthirdstepbrokecover.Hesawtheformofagirl--nymph,fairy,ormortal,heknewnotwhich.HewasnomoretheministerofWoodilee,buteternalwanderingyouth,andhegavechase.

           Thegreengownwaveredforamomentbetweentwognarledpinesandthenwaslostinthedeadfern.
