           Therewerethreeofthem--troopers,theyseemed,withbuffcapsanddoubletsandheavycavalryswords,andbesidestheirownscraggyhorsestherewasaledbeast.ThethreemenwereconsultingwhenDavidstumbledonthem,andatthesightofhimtheyhadsprungapartandlaidhandsontheirswords.Butasecondglancehadreassuredthem.

           ItwasnotanencounterwhichDavidwouldhavesought,forwanderingsoldieryhadabadnameintheland.Somethingofthismayhavebeenintheother’smind,forhisnextwordswereanexplanation.

           Thethreehadmovedoutfromtheshadeofthealdersandwerenowclearunderthesky.Troopers,commontroopersandshabbyatthat,ridingweary,ill-conditionedbeasts.Thenagwhichthethirdledwasamererickleofbones.
