           Upinhistree-toptheministerhadnowanundividedmind.Hehadthenamesofseveralofthefemalesofthecovenfirminhismemory,andforthemenhemusttrusttoReiverslaw.Thereweresomeofthedancerswithgoat-horns,butastheroutswungrounditseemedtohimthatanewgoat-maskhadappeared,ataller,wilderfigure,whowasspeciallydevoutinhisobeisancebeforeHound-face.WasitReiverslawwithhisaniseed?

           Thenighthadbecomeverydark,andtheonlylightinthegladecamefromthecandleswhichburnedinitshiddenhollows.Andthensuddenlyacolderwindblew,andliketheburstofadamcameadelugeofrain.TheLammasfloodshadbroken,stealingupontheworld,asistheirfashion,outofafairsky.

           ItseemedtoDavid--andhehelditpartoftheinfernalmiracle--thatthetorrentdidnotquenchthelights.Inatricehehimselfwassoakedtotheskin,butthecandlesstillburned,thoughtherainbeatonthefloorofthegladewithasoundlikeawhip-lash....Butitendedthedance.
