           Inhisseasonofdesolationhehadnotdaredtothinkofher;shebelongedtoaworldoflight,andhadnopartinhisperplexities.Toletherimagefillhismemoryseemedsacrilege,whenthatmemoryheldsomanyfoulshadows.Butastheskiesclearedforhimherfigureappearedagaininthesunlightandhedidnotbanishit,foritwasshewhowastheextremeoppositeofthehorroroftheWood--sheandherbrightdomainofoaksandhazels.HewouldgoagaintoParadiseforhissoul’scomfort.

           Hechoseadaywhenhewascertainshewouldbethere.Therewasaweekoffieryweather--moistheatandheavyskiesandflyingthunderstorms,andafteritcameaspelloflongbrightdays,whenthesunshinehadadrytonicinit,andtheafternoonsweremellowandgolden.OnonesuchafternoonhecrossedtheHillofDeerandenteredtheglenwhichdividedthepinesfromthehazels.

           Midsummerhadchangedtheplace.Theburn-sideturfwasallthymeandeyebrightandmilkwort,withthestarsofthegrassofParnassusinthewetplaces.Thewaterwasclearandsmall,andthecascadesfellinatinklingsilver.Hehadnodoubtsastohisroadnow.Paradisewasamongthehazels,butonecouldfinditonlybydescendingtheglentowherethepinesoftheWoodbeganandthenturningtotherighttowardstheGreenshiel.

           Presentlythepinesinasombreregimentroseonthesteeptotheleft.HelookedatthebeginningoftheWoodwithanawewhichhadnownofearinit.Theplacewashateful,butitcouldnotdaunthim.Itwasthebattlegroundtowhichhewascalled....
