Itwentdownatanacuteangleforsomefiftyfeet,thefloorbeingcoveredwithbrokenstone.Thencethereextendedalong,straightpassagecutinthesolidrock.Iamnogeologist,buttheliningofthiscorridorwascertainlyofsomehardermaterialthanlimestone,fortherewerepointswhereIcouldactuallyseethetool-markswhichtheoldminershadleftintheirexcavation,asfreshasiftheyhadbeendoneyesterday.Downthisstrange,old-worldcorridorIstumbled,myfeebleflamethrowingadimcircleoflightaroundme,whichmadetheshadowsbeyondthemorethreateningandobscure.Finally,IcametoaspotwheretheRomantunnelopenedintoawater-worncavern—ahugehall,hungwithlongwhiteiciclesoflimedeposit.FromthiscentralchamberIcoulddimlyperceivethatanumberofpassageswornbythesubterraneanstreamswoundawayintothedepthsoftheearth.
