Thefirststageinthisdenouementwasthatthesmallroomintheturretbecameuninhabitable.Thisoccurredthroughthefalloftheworm-eatenoakenbeamwhichsupportedtheceiling.Rottenwithage,itsnappedinthemiddleonemorning,andbroughtdownaquantityofplasterwithit.FortunatelySirJohnwasnotintheroomatthetime.Hispreciousboxwasrescuedfromamongstthedebrisandbroughtintothelibrary,where,henceforward,itwaslockedwithinhisbureau.SirJohntooknostepstorepairthedamage,andIneverhadanopportunityofsearchingforthatsecretpassage,theexistenceofwhichIhadsurmised.Astothelady,Ihadthoughtthatthiswouldhavebroughthervisitstoanend,hadInotoneeveningheardMr.RichardsaskingMrs.StevenswhothewomanwaswhomhehadoverheardtalkingtoSirJohninthelibrary.Icouldnotcatchherreply,butIsawfromhermannerthatitwasnotthefirsttimethatshehadhadtoansweroravoidthesamequestion.
