           Tothiselaborateandplausiblehypothesistheanswerofthepoliceandofthecompanywas,first,thatnosuchticketwasfound;secondly,thattheslowtrainwouldneverrunparalleltotheexpress;and,thirdly,thatthelocaltrainhadbeenstationaryinKing’sLangleyStationwhentheexpress,goingatfiftymilesanhour,hadflashedpastit.Soperishedtheonlysatisfyingexplanation,andfiveyearshaveelapsedwithoutsupplyinganewone.Now,atlast,therecomesastatementwhichcoversallthefacts,andwhichmustberegardedasauthentic.IttooktheshapeofaletterdatedfromNewYork,andaddressedtothesamecriminalinvestigatorwhosetheoryIhavequoted.Itisgivenhereinextenso,withtheexceptionofthetwoopeningparagraphs,whicharepersonalintheirnature:
