           "Ihavebeenthinkingagreatdeal,andIfinditveryhardtogiveyouup.ThesamewithLizzie.Itrytofightagainstit,butitwillalwayscomebacktome.IsendyousomemoneywhichwillchangeintotwentyEnglishpounds.ThisshouldbeenoughtobringbothLizzieandyouacrosstheAtlantic,andyouwillfindtheHamburgboatswhichstopatSouthamptonverygoodboats,andcheaperthanLiverpool.IfyoucouldcomehereandstopattheJohnstonHouseIwouldtryandsendyouwordhowtomeet,butthingsareverydifficultwithmeatpresent,andIamnotveryhappy,findingithardtogiveyoubothup.Sonomoreatpresent,fromyourlovinghusband,

           "JamesMcPherson."

           Foratimeitwasconfidentlyanticipatedthatthisletterwouldleadtotheclearingupofthewholematter,themoresoasitwasascertainedthatapassengerwhoboreacloseresemblancetothemissingguardhadtravelledfromSouthamptonunderthenameofSummersintheHamburgandNewYorklinerVistula,whichstarteduponthe7thofJune.Mrs.McPhersonandhersisterLizzieDoltonwentacrosstoNewYorkasdirectedandstayedforthreeweeksattheJohnstonHouse,withouthearinganythingfromthemissingman.ItisprobablethatsomeinjudiciouscommentsinthePressmayhavewarnedhimthatthepolicewereusingthemasabait.
