           Thegrotesquenatureoftheeventhelpedtodetractfromitsimportance,forthepapersweredisinclinedtobelievethefactsasreportedtothem.MorethanoneoftheLondonjournalstreatedthematterasaningenioushoax,untilthecoroner’sinquestupontheunfortunatedriver(aninquestwhichelicitednothingofimportance)convincedthemofthetragedyoftheincident.

           Mr.Bland,accompaniedbyInspectorCollins,theseniordetectiveofficerintheserviceofthecompany,wentdowntoKenyonJunctionthesameevening,andtheirresearchlastedthroughoutthefollowingday,butwasattendedwithpurelynegativeresults.Notonlywasnotracefoundofthemissingtrain,butnoconjecturecouldbeputforwardwhichcouldpossiblyexplainthefacts.Atthesametime,InspectorCollins’sofficialreport(whichliesbeforemeasIwrite)servedtoshowthatthepossibilitiesweremorenumerousthanmighthavebeenexpected.

           "Inthestretchofrailwaybetweenthesetwopoints,"saidhe,"thecountryisdottedwithironworksandcollieries.Ofthese,somearebeingworkedandsomehavebeenabandoned.Therearenofewerthantwelvewhichhavesmall-gaugelineswhichruntrolly-carsdowntothemainline.Thesecan,ofcourse,bedisregarded.Besidesthese,however,therearesevenwhichhave,orhavehad,properlinesrunningdownandconnectingwithpointstothemainline,soastoconveytheirproducefromthemouthoftheminetothegreatcentresofdistribution.Ineverycasetheselinesareonlyafewmilesinlength.
