MySouthAmericanrelativewassoengrossedbyhisgroundsandtheircuriousoccupants,thatIhardlygavehimcreditatfirstforhavinganyinterestsoutsidethem.Thathehadsome,andpressingones,wassoonborneinuponmebythenumberoftelegramswhichhereceived.Theyarrivedatallhours,andwerealwaysopenedbyhimwiththeutmosteagernessandanxietyuponhisface.SometimesIimaginedthatitmustbetheTurf,andsometimestheStockExchange,butcertainlyhehadsomeveryurgentbusinessgoingforwardswhichwasnottransactedupontheDownsofSuffolk.Duringthesixdaysofmyvisithehadneverfewerthanthreeorfourtelegramsaday,andsometimesasmanyassevenoreight.
Ihadoccupiedthesesixdayssowell,thatbytheendofthemIhadsucceededingettinguponthemostcordialtermswithmycousin.Everynightwehadsatuplateinthebilliard-room,hetellingmethemostextraordinarystoriesofhisadventuresinAmerica—storiessodesperateandreckless,thatIcouldhardlyassociatethemwiththebrownlittle,chubbymanbeforeme.
