           Whenthechildhadpattedhisheadlovingly,hesatdownbeforeher,hisredtonguehangingoutonesideofhismouth,andlookedupintoherfacewithhisbrightbrowneyes,asifaskingherwhattheyshoulddonext.

           Dorothydidn’tknow.Shelookedaroundheranxiouslyforsomefamiliarlandmark;buteverythingwasstrange.Betweenthebranchesofthemanyroadsweregreenmeadowsandafewshrubsandtrees,butshecouldn’tseeanywherethefarm-housefromwhichshehadjustcome,oranythingshehadeverseenbefore—excepttheshaggymanandToto.Besidesthis,shehadturnedaroundandaroundsomanytimestryingtofindoutwhereshewas,thatnowshecouldn’teventellwhichdirectionthefarm-houseoughttobein;andthisbegantoworryherandmakeherfeelanxious.

           "I’m’fraid,ShaggyMan,"shesaid,withasigh,"thatwe’relost!"

           "That’snothingtobeafraidof,"hereplied,throwingawaythecoreofhisappleandbeginningtoeatanotherone."Eachoftheseroadsmustleadsomewhere,oritwouldn’tbehere.Sowhatdoesitmatter?"

           "Iwanttogohomeagain,"shesaid.

           "Well,whydon’tyou?"saidhe.

           "Idon’tknowwhichroadtotake."

           "Thatistoobad,"hesaid,shakinghisshaggyheadgravely."IwishIcouldhelpyou;butIcan’t.I’mastrangerintheseparts."

           "SeemsasifIwere,too,"shesaid,sittingdownbesidehim."It’sfunny.
