           Themanleanedonastoutgold-headedcane,bendingforwardonhisseattowatchhisvisitorsapproach.

           Singularlyenough,themusicalsoundstheyhadheardseemedtocomefromtheinsideofthefatmanhimself;forhewasplayingnoinstrumentnorwasanytobeseennearhim.

           Theycameupandstoodinarow,staringathim,andhestaredbackwhilethequeersoundscamefromhimasbefore:

           Tiddle-iddle-iddle,oompom-pom,

           Oom,pom-pom;oompom-pom!

           Tiddle-widdle-iddle,oompom-pom,

           Oom,pom-pom—pah!

           "Why,he’sareg’larmusicker!"saidButton-Bright.

           "What’samusicker?"askedDorothy.

           "Him!"saidtheboy.

           Hearingthis,thefatmansatupalittlestifferthanbefore,asifhehadreceivedacompliment,andstillcamethesounds:

           Tiddle-widdle-iddle,oompom-pom,

           Oompom-pom,oom—

           "Stopit!"criedtheshaggyman,earnestly."Stopthatdreadfulnoise."

           Thefatmanlookedathimsadlyandbeganhisreply.Whenhespokethemusicchangedandthewordsseemedtoaccompanythenotes.Hesaid—orrathersang:

           Itisn’tanoisethatyouhear,

           ButMusic,harmonicandclear.

           Mybreathmakesmeplay

           Likeanorgan,allday—

           Thatbassnoteisinmyleftear.

           "Howfunny!"exclaimedDorothy;"hesayshisbreathmakesthemusic."

           "That’sallnonsense,"declaredtheshaggyman;butnowthemusicbeganagain,andtheyalllistenedcarefully.

           Mylungsarefullofreedslikethose

           Inorgans,thereforeIsuppose,

           IfIbreatheinoroutmynose,

           Thereedsareboundtoplay.
