AfterwardtheKingcalledthebrowndonkey,whichwashisfavoriteservant,andbadeitleadhisgueststothevacanthousewheretheyweretopassthenight.Ithadonlyoneroomandnofurnitureexceptbedsofcleanstrawandafewmatsofwovengrasses;butourtravelerswerecontentedwiththesesimplethingsbecausetheyrealizeditwasthebesttheDonkey-Kinghadtoofferthem.Assoonasitwasdarktheylaydownonthematsandsleptcomfortablyuntilmorning.
Atdaybreaktherewasadreadfulnoisethroughoutthecity.Everydonkeyintheplacebrayed.Whenheheardthistheshaggymanwokeupandcalledout"Hee-haw!"asloudashecould.
"Stopthat!"saidButton-Bright,inacrossvoice.BothDorothyandPollylookedattheshaggymanreproachfully.
"Icouldn’thelpit,mydears,"hesaid,asifashamedofhisbray;"butI’lltrynottodoitagain."
Ofcoursedtheyforgavehim,forashestillhadtheLoveMagnetinhispockettheywereallobligedtolovehimasmuchasever.
TheydidnotseetheKingagain,butKik-a-brayrememberedthem;foratableappearedagainintheirroomwiththesamefooduponitasonthenightbefore.
"Don’twantpieforbreakfus’,"saidButton-Bright.
"I’llgiveyousomeofmybeefsteak,"proposedDorothy;"there’splentyforusall."
Thatsuitedtheboybetter,buttheshaggymansaidhewascontentwithhisapplesandsandwiches,althoughheendedthemealbyeatingButton-Bright’spie.Pollylikedherdewdropsandmist-cakesbetterthananyotherfood,sotheyallenjoyedanexcellentbreakfast
