Hisfacewascheeryandhiseyestwinklingwithhumor,soPollyandButton-Brightwerenotatallafraidofthewonderfulpersonagewhosefameasahumbugmagicianhadspreadthroughouttheworld.AftergreetingDorothywithmuchaffection,hestoodmodestlybehindOzma’sthroneandlistenedtothelivelyprattleoftheyoungpeople.
Nowtheshaggymanappeared,andsostartlingwashisappearance,allcladinshaggynewraiment,thatDorothycried"Oh!"andclaspedherhandsimpulsivelyassheexaminedherfriendwithpleasedeyes.
"He’sstillshaggy,allright,"remarkedButton-Bright;andOzmanoddedbrightlybecauseshehadmeanttheshaggymantoremainshaggywhensheprovidedhisnewclothesforhim.
Dorothyledhimtowardthethrone,ashewasshyinsuchfinecompany,andpresentedhimgracefullytothePrincess,saying:
"This,yourHighness,ismyfriend,theshaggyman,whoownstheLoveMagnet."
"YouarewelcometoOz,"saidthegirlRuler,ingraciousaccents."Buttellme,sir,wheredidyougettheLoveMagnetwhichyousayyouown?"
Theshaggymangrewredandlookeddowncast,asheansweredinalowvoice:
"Istoleit,yourMajesty."
"Oh,ShaggyMan!"criedDorothy."Howdreadful!AndyoutoldmetheEskimogaveyoutheLoveMagnet."
Heshuffledfirstononefootandthenontheother,muchembarrassed.
"Itoldyouafalsehood,Dorothy,"hesaid;"butnow,havingbathedintheTruthPond,Imusttellnothingbutthetruth."
"Whydidyoustealit?"askedOzma,gently.
"Becausenoonelovedme,orcaredforme,"saidtheshaggyman,"andIwantedtobelovedagreatdeal.
