           Sotheoldmanleanedbackinhischair,andledhisyoungcompanionontotellinghimstillmoreofhimself,andwiththatoddgleaminhiseyeswatchedthelittlefellowashetalked.LordFauntleroywasquitewillingtoanswerallhisquestionsandchattedoninhisgeniallittlewayquitecomposedly.HetoldhimallaboutDickandJake,andtheapple-woman,andMr.Hobbs;hedescribedtheRepublicanRallyinallthegloryofitsbannersandtransparencies,torchesandrockets.Inthecourseoftheconversation,hereachedtheFourthofJulyandtheRevolution,andwasjustbecomingenthusiastic,whenhesuddenlyrecollectedsomethingandstoppedveryabruptly.

           “Whatisthematter?”demandedhisgrandfather.“Whydon’tyougoon?”
