Mrs.Mellon’shandsomeoldfacelookedaspleasedasthefaceofthelodge-keeper’swifehaddone.

Cedricwonderedwhyitwasagreatday.HelookedatMrs.Melloncuriously.Itseemedtohimforamomentasifthereweretearsinhereyes,andyetitwasevidentshewasnotunhappy.Shesmileddownonhim.
“Thecatlefttwobeautifulkittenshere,”shesaid;“theyshallbesentuptoyourlordship’snursery.”
Mr.Havishamsaidafewwordstoherinalowvoice.

Afewminuteslater,theverytallfootmaninlivery,whohadescortedCedrictothelibrarydoor,openeditandannounced:“LordFauntleroy,mylord,”inquiteamajestictone.Ifhewasonlyafootman,hefeltitwasratheragrandoccasionwhentheheircamehometohisownlandandpossessions,andwasusheredintothepresenceoftheoldEarl,whoseplaceandtitlehewastotake.
