Andwhentheyturnedawayhestoodandlookedaftertheminadazedkindofway,andtherewasstillamistinhiseyes,andalumpinhisthroat,ashewatchedthegallantlittlefiguremarchinggaylyalongbythesideofitstall,rigidescort.
Untilthedayofhisdeparture,hislordshipspentasmuchtimeaspossiblewithMr.Hobbsinthestore.GloomhadsettleduponMr.Hobbs;hewasmuchdepressedinspirits.Whenhisyoungfriendbroughttohimintriumphthepartinggiftofagoldwatchandchain,Mr.Hobbsfounditdifficulttoacknowledgeitproperly.Helaidthecaseonhisstoutknee,andblewhisnoseviolentlyseveraltimes.
“There’ssomethingwrittenonit,”saidCedric,—“insidethecase.Itoldthemanmyselfwhattosay.’Fromhisoldestfriend,LordFauntleroy,toMr.Hobbs.Whenthisyousee,rememberme.’Idon’twantyoutoforgetme.”
Mr.Hobbsblewhisnoseveryloudlyagain.
“Isha’n’tforgetyou,”hesaid,speakingatriflehuskily,asDickhadspoken;“nordon’tyougoandforgetmewhenyougetamongtheBritisharrystocracy.”
“Ishouldn’tforgetyou,whoeverIwasamong,”answeredhislordship.“I’vespentmyhappiesthourswithyou;atleast,someofmyhappiesthours.Ihopeyou’llcometoseemesometime.I’msuremygrandpapawouldbeverymuchpleased.
