Andthesunshoneandtheflagsflutteredandthegameswereplayedandthedancesdanced,andasthegayetieswentonandthejoyousafternoonpassed,hislittlelordshipwassimplyradiantlyhappy.

Therewassomeoneelsewhowashappy,too,—anoldman,who,thoughhehadbeenrichandnobleallhislife,hadnotoftenbeenveryhonestlyhappy.Perhaps,indeed,IshalltellyouthatIthinkitwasbecausehewasratherbetterthanhehadbeenthathewasratherhappier.Hehadnot,indeed,suddenlybecomeasgoodasFauntleroythoughthim;but,atleast,hehadbeguntolovesomething,andhehadseveraltimesfoundasortofpleasureindoingthekindthingswhichtheinnocent,kindlittleheartofachildhadsuggested,—andthatwasabeginning.Andeverydayhehadbeenmorepleasedwithhisson’swife.Itwastrue,asthepeoplesaid,thathewasbeginningtolikehertoo.Helikedtohearhersweetvoiceandtoseehersweetface;andashesatinhisarm-chair,heusedtowatchherandlistenasshetalkedtoherboy;andheheardloving,gentlewordswhichwerenewtohim,andhebegantoseewhythelittlefellowwhohadlivedinaNewYorksidestreetandknowngrocery-menandmadefriendswithboot-blacks,wasstillsowell-bredandmanlyalittlefellowthathemadenooneashamedofhim,evenwhenfortunechangedhimintotheheirtoanEnglishearldom,livinginanEnglishcastle.
Itwasreallyaverysimplething,afterall,—itwasonlythathehadlivednearakindandgentleheart,andhadbeentaughttothinkkindthoughtsalwaysandtocareforothers.
