Theverynextmorning,oneofDick’scustomerswasrathersurprised.Hewasayounglawyerjustbeginningpractice—aspoorasaveryyounglawyercanpossiblybe,butabright,energeticyoungfellow,withsharpwitandagoodtemper.HehadashabbyofficenearDick’sstand,andeverymorningDickblackedhisbootsforhim,andquiteoftentheywerenotexactlywater-tight,buthealwayshadafriendlywordorajokeforDick.
Thatparticularmorning,whenheputhisfootontherest,hehadanillustratedpaperinhishand—anenterprisingpaper,withpicturesinitofconspicuouspeopleandthings.Hehadjustfinishedlookingitover,andwhenthelastbootwaspolished,hehandeditovertotheboy.
