           Havishamhadnoticed,duringhisinterviewswithher,thatthoughshehadapassionatetemper,andacoarse,insolentmanner,shewasneithersoclevernorsoboldasshemeanttobe;sheseemedsometimestobealmostoverwhelmedbythepositioninwhichshehadplacedherself.Itwasasifshehadnotexpectedtomeetwithsuchopposition.

           “Yousayyouaremyeldestson’swife.Ifthatistrue,andiftheproofyouofferistoomuchforus,thelawisonyourside.Inthatcase,yourboyisLordFauntleroy.Thematterwillbesiftedtothebottom,youmayrestassured.Ifyourclaimsareproved,youwillbeprovidedfor.
