Thiswasthebeginningofquiteasubstantialfriendship.WhenDickwentuptothestore,Mr.Hobbsreceivedhimwithgreathospitality.Hegavehimachairtiltedagainstthedoor,nearabarrelofapples,andafterhisyoungvisitorwasseated,hemadeajerkatthemwiththehandinwhichheheldhispipe,saying:

Thenhelookedatthestorypapers,andafterthattheyreadanddiscussedtheBritisharistocracy;andMr.Hobbssmokedhispipeveryhardandshookhisheadagreatdeal.Heshookitmostwhenhepointedoutthehighstoolwiththemarksonitslegs.

HeseemedtoderiveagreatdealofcomfortfromhisreflectionsandDick’svisit.BeforeDickwenthome,theyhadasupperinthesmallback-room;theyhadcrackersandcheeseandsardines,andothercannedthingsoutofthestore,andMr.Hobbssolemnlyopenedtwobottlesofgingerale,andpouringouttwoglasses,proposedatoast.
