Thechildreninthecottageswouldruntothedoortolookattheproudlittlebrownponywiththegallantlittlefiguresittingsostraightinthesaddle,andtheyounglordwouldsnatchoffhiscapandswingitatthem,andshout,“Hullo!Good-morning!”inaveryunlordlymanner,thoughwithgreatheartiness.Sometimeshewouldstopandtalkwiththechildren,andonceWilkinscamebacktothecastlewithastoryofhowFauntleroyhadinsistedondismountingnearthevillageschool,sothataboywhowaslameandtiredmightridehomeonhispony.
