Whenthegroomhadbroughtouttheprettycreature,whicharcheditsbrown,glossyneckandtosseditsfineheadinthesun,theEarlhadsatattheopenwindowofthelibraryandhadlookedonwhileFauntleroytookhisfirstridinglesson.Hewonderediftheboywouldshowsignsoftimidity.Itwasnotaverysmallpony,andhehadoftenseenchildrenlosecourageinmakingtheirfirstessayatriding.
Fauntleroymountedingreatdelight.Hehadneverbeenonaponybefore,andhewasinthehighestspirits.Wilkins,thegroom,ledtheanimalbythebridleupanddownbeforethelibrarywindow.

Butsittingupstraightandbeingledatawalkwerenotaltogetherandcompletelysatisfactory.Afterafewminutes,Fauntleroyspoketohisgrandfather—watchinghimfromthewindow:
“Can’tIgobymyself?”heasked;“andcan’tIgofaster?TheboyonFifthAvenueusedtotrotandcanter!”
“Doyouthinkyoucouldtrotandcanter?”saidtheEarl.
