Thomasclosedthecarriagedoor;and,afterapuzzledlook,Fauntleroyranupthedrive.TheEarlhadtheopportunity—asMr.Havishamoncehad—ofseeingapairofhandsome,stronglittlelegsflashoverthegroundwithastonishingrapidity.Evidentlytheirownerhadnointentionoflosinganytime.Thecarriagerolledslowlyaway,buthislordshipdidnotatonceleanback;hestilllookedout.Throughaspaceinthetreeshecouldseethehousedoor;itwaswideopen.Thelittlefiguredashedupthesteps;anotherfigure—alittlefigure,too,slenderandyoung,initsblackgown—rantomeetit.Itseemedasiftheyflewtogether,asFauntleroyleapedintohismother’sarms,hangingaboutherneckandcoveringhersweetyoungfacewithkisses.
